Apr 13, 2012  I installed a Seagate Momentus XT 500 in a 2010 MacBook Pro in December 2011. I noticed a speed difference right away and was quite happy with the drive.that is until I started getting random system crashes, brought the whole OS down. Like with every hard drive manufacturer some drive models may be noisier than others. Look to benchmarking sites such as Storage Review or Tom's Hardware Review for information on new drives or do a Google search.
Faster drives will consume a little more power than slower drives, but the differences aren't much. You can visit any drive manufacturer's web site and find spec sheets on all their models where you will find power consumption information.
I've used 7200 RPM Seagates in several MBPs over the years and did not consider them very noisy in my machines.
